People of color are being killed everyday. The statistics will tell you they’re being killed by “natural causes” such as heart attack, diabetes and stroke, although these circumstances are often caused by the lack of access to healthy foods which people in urban neighborhoods often deal with for generations at a time. Some stats will even cite “black on black crime” as another leading cause of rampant death in the hood, even though black on black crime is a myth due to the fact that whites kills other whites at the same rate. What statistics WON’T tell you, though, is that black people are being disproportiantely targeted and murdered by state and local law enforcement. What they also won’t tell you is that since the inception of the “war on drugs” (during the darkness of the Reagan era) black people have also been targeted and funneled into the prison industrial complex by the millions every year, but I digress.
During these past few days of outrage and shock I’ve taken special note of the reactions of the masses and the reactions of the media. I began to see how they’re deeply connected to one another. I noticed that the more sensationalized the news coverage, the more wounded and in pain the masses became. I began to see how the media used violent and disturbing imagery (like the shocking NY Daily News Cover of #AltonSterling see image here) paired with neutral language and inconsistent information to toy with the emotions of the people, ESPECIALLY people of color. I started to realize how amerikkka benefits from collective black fear and how we’re being emotionally manipulated by those in power everyday not only with news coverage but with TV in general.
In case you weren’t aware, all of our millions of channels are owned by the same 6 giant corporations (Viacom, Time Warner, CBS, Disney, General Electric and News Corp). What this means is that everything we’re seeing is coming from either one of those 6 mega corps; from the news, to pop culture television, to reality television, to sitcoms. After doing a little digging, I was (very quickly) able to find out that most of the 6 CEO’s of these “megacorps” are white, Republican, heterosexual, wealthy, mostly Catholic men. Coincidence? I think not.
I firmly believe, based on my own experiences and what I’ve come to know, that white amerikkka has a plausible interest in wanting to weaken and eventually kill black consciousness and strength by using the media, but especially the news, to keep us in a constant state of fear. A people in fear are easy to manipulate because they’re malleable and prone to violence due to the constant reminder of death. People of color are threatened everyday by rampant police presence in the hood, they’re reminded by poor media representation that society thinks they’re lesser and to top it off the news coverage surrounding black tragedy often, if not always, finds a way to both blame the victim and minimize the circumstances. HOW DO YOU THINK THIS MAKES US FEEL? To see our people dying but to also see how nobody really cares? It kills us softly. I’ve seen so many tweets, videos, letters, poems and posts in these last 2 days ALONE from people in pain, afraid to see their own dying but stuck with no real solution. I’ve also seen the media heartlessly brush all our woes under the table, as if to more deeply stab us in the heart.
I don’t know how we can solve this issue, my brothers and sisters but I do ask that you minimize the time you spend watching the news and television in general. It’s poisonous and does more harm than good. Try to spend more time with your loved ones, reading a good book, enjoying nature or praying for the souls who are dying everyday. Understand that there’s a vendetta against us, against our freedom. Those in power are very interested in seeing us frail and belittled, but it’s important that in these times we channel the strength of our ancestors, those we knew and those we never got to meet. We need to ask for their blessings… We’re surely going to need them because this is a time of revolutionary warfare and we must fight back BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.
